We can talk about huge moments which bring us happiness – travelling to other countries, starting your dream job, a retreat away to a spa, your favourite team scores the winning point – and I definitely have a few of those my own. But how often do we think about the little moments in everyday life which bring us joy.
Life seems rather despondent at the moment, and I’m sure you’re thinking of a few things right now, so why not reflect of those little everyday things which bring us happiness, and remember what we have to be grateful for.
I have my list of 5 things.
Lets begin……
1. Time alone

Time by myself is probably one of my favourite things. I feel I enjoy alone time more than the next person but maybe that’s because I need more time to myself than the next person or I just grew up without brothers and sisters and ‘by myself’ is the default.
I enjoy my own company, not distracted by other people and things and especially after a long tiring day. I need that time to rest and recharge.
I feel at ease by myself, more able to enjoy watching the videos I like to watch or listening to the podcasts I like to listen to.
I’m also an experienced solo traveller, and now I think about it, that was probably the only way I travelled throughout my 20’s. I would join tours and such and make friends, but it was just me. No family or friends from home, and that’s the way I enjoyed travelling the globe.
Of course you need to strike a balance between being in community and being by yourself, but I think that comes down to what you need from either one. I am lucky to be comfortable both by myself and in community, meaning I can jump into one or the other and feel natural doing so.
But time alone is definitely the goat.
2. A clean kitchen

I love cleaning the kitchen, making it clutter free and wiping down surfaces. A lot of the time my mind is cluttered and stressed so when I have a cluttered kitchen, I need to clean it as I can’t have the external rooms as cluttered as my internal mind. It’ll just cause me more distress.
A clean kitchen means you can start cooking it in right away and make your food quicker and it all looks neat and tidy.
Another little thing which makes me happy.
3. A good night’s sleep

This has been a thing I have been missing for a while. I love to sleep and I love to go to sleep early too. You heal during sleep so you’re set up for the next day.
When I wake up after a good night’s sleep I feel energised, refreshed and I have a capacity to do more during the day. I feel more motivated and less sluggish.
I feel happier too and have more of a tolerance for what may happen during the day. I usually workout early in the morning, so if I have slept well I will choose to workout. If I have slept poorly I will choose to get as much sleep as I can do before I have to get up for work.
Sleep is one of my favourite things.
4. A walk in nature

I love walking in nature, be that in a forest, a park, the beach. I can hear the sounds of my surroundings and it takes me out of the constant thoughts in my head. It’s peaceful and is a welcome break to my day.
Theres always something to look at too. Trees swaying in the wind, squirrels running around, the waves crashing on the beach, seagulls soaring in the air.
Mostly I enjoy walking by myself in nature as I can take myself wherever I need to go and explore in whatever direction interests me. Conversly, hiking in a group is also fun as you get to explore beautiful scenery and have someone to talk to who also has a similar interest in the outdoors.
Finding whatever nature there is around you and giving it a go would be a great start here, as I know it can be hard to find time these days.
5. The first bite of a good meal

The first bite of a good meal is something you can never experience twice, and something we’re always looking for again.
I consider myself a foodie so I’ve had my fair share of good meals, and that first bite is always the best. When the food is balanced and flavourful I feel warm and happy inside. Sometimes the flavour is intense or it can be mellow depending on what the dish is but there is something so satisfying about a good meal and that first bite.
Enjoying it with someone who is also into food is even better. You get to share what you think about the food and go into description about what flavours you are tasting. It is a great shared experience.
A good source of happiness.
There we have it, 5 everyday things that bring me happiness.
